The Mermaid

Posted by T.S.Garp

Allusive and seductive like most women are, yet mermaids have a special quality by far.

We met in the midnight hour

In the same place near the cemetery tower

Under the bright full moon during autumn’s gloom

Near the seashore where lives were put to rest forever more

Far away from town, we held our secret that must never be found

Guided by candlelight, a luminous speck in the night

Over the hills and reef I tread carefully

All for my dearest, overcome without dread confidently

From murky depths of water unseen

I could hear her sweet musical voice sing

Rising up to greet me instantly

A fair maiden so slenderly

Held me in her bosom so tenderly

Such bliss was this, my heart sang for you

To look upon glittering eyes and lips so true

To have love fancy me from the sea

A sweet kiss that held me passionately
